The Poem

In a small town, a young lad found his way,
To chess, he was introduced, to his heart's array.
His friend and mother nurtured the spark,
A hobby, a club, in the chess world he'd embark.

Quickly, he grasped the game's intricate art,
Passion grew strong, he longed to take part.
Approaching the coach, he sought to learn more,
The boy's potential he couldn't ignore.

The coach saw promise and a future so bright,
To the Capital, they ventured, a challenging flight.
Under thunderstorms and the sun's relentless glare,
His love for chess remained, unwavering and rare.

Parents who once hesitated, unsure and afraid,
For their child's dream, their stance they remade.
Moved to the city, his dedication unwavering,
Commitment and talent, there was no wavering.

National achievements, he swiftly did earn,
In just a year or two, to the top he'd discern.
World representation, his talent on display,
Chess was his muse, guiding his way.

Yet life's seasons passed, like a fleeting train,
Moments with family, lost in the chess game.
School years and friendships, he had to forego,
To chase his chess dreams, the only way to grow.

Transitioning to adulthood, new burdens in tow,
Family responsibilities, financial strains to know.
Silent struggles he faced, under pressure's silent weight,
No friends to confide in, his emotions left to dissipate.

He turned to smoking, then to drink,
Addictions formed, causing life to sink.
Relationships tested, distances hard to bear,
The life of a chess player, a lonely affair.

A city girl, she couldn't comprehend,
The complexities of his life, the chess world's blend.
He chose to release her, set her spirit free,
A solitary path, a chess devotee.

Then life's hardships came into view,
Family issues, with chess passion anew.
A year slipped by, the dream held at bay,
As family obligations required his stay.

The world locked down, no chess in sight,
Time with family, he held on tight.
Months turned to years, as the chess world faded,
He embraced a different rhythm, life was serenaded.

Coaching became his new quest,
Teaching the game he loved, a passion he'd attest.
But the yearning to play never ceased to call,
More than coaching, chess reigned over all.

Tournaments resumed, his passion rekindled,
But age was creeping, his sponsorship dwindled.
Balancing both, he struggled to endure,
Yet, coaching and playing couldn't be secure.

Savings depleted, no sponsor in sight,
He faced financial burdens, a daunting fight.
He turned to his parents, seeking aid anew,
Their response, "You're grown now, you'll pull through."

At that age when adulthood beckoned his door,
He questioned his choices, his life's evermore.
Education, a subject he had not embraced,
Would it now leave him in a career's barren waste?

His friends, chess companions, chose a different way,
Pursuing education, bright futures on display.
He pondered if he, too, should have trod that path,
Trading chess dreams for books, a life aftermath.

In this trial, he pondered, he mused,
Aware of his parents' sacrifices, their dreams diffused.
Was the chess path chosen worth the cost?
Childhood moments missed, life's joys lost.
Relationship struggles, a heavy burden to bear,
Chess made it harder, he couldn't help but care.
Family moments missed, while he traveled the land,
Chess kept him distant, life slipping through his hand.

A life less social, major events passed by,
As the chess board ruled, joy eluded the eye.
In the end, he questioned the path he'd trod,
Balancing chess and life's struggles, was it worth the odds?
He wondered if the sacrifices, the dreams and the strife,
Were chess player's dues, the heart of a chess life.
A journey of grandmasters, a life well rehearsed,
In his quiet reflection, the chess player's universe.

In the end, he felt what the Great Napoleon had once said:
"There's nothing we can do."
