Teaching methodology

Normally the first 2-3 lessons with a student are used to help me to understand the most important aspects about their chess persona (playing style, opening preferences, endgame knowledge and level of psychological strength, etc.). For this, there is no better way than to look at their own annotated games and hear their thoughts. When I have a good idea what my student wants to achieve and his/her experience and abilities I put together a plan of activities which I consider the most effective for him/her at their current stage of chess development and we begin to work on them. Individual lessons typically take the following structure:
firstly we review the student’s recent games and identify weaknesses or areas for improvement; and
secondly we take corrective action by reviewing relevant interesting thematic examples and exercises together with other material as applicable.
