This change stems not from boredom but towards a very central goal of goal of Lichess: free software. We previously used a non-free library for which we were granted an exception to use, but it was against our goals and also introduced legal complexities, see: github.com/lichess-org/lila/issues/3509.
We're currently working towards smoothing the edges and fixing the spotted issues. For example #4 2. and #3 have been solved, and will be effective soon.
There are also other practical benefits (and drawbacks, which will hopefully be solved if proving impacting) from switching our graph library, which are listed here: github.com/lichess-org/lila/pull/14357
